Coaching Symposium





The MSYSA coaching symposium series is a unique educational opportunity.  For these clinics we bring in guest clinicians from around the world to help expose and educate our coaches to different coaching philosophies and practices.

  The Michigan State Youth Soccer Association is proud to announce that the High Velocity Sports Center (located at 46245 Michigan Ave., Canton, Michigan 48188) has been selected to host the MSYSA Coaching (& Director’s Academy) Symposium. The symposium is a one-day event that will take place on Wednesday, December 9, 2015 from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, where coaches from around the State as well as coaches who are participating in the MSYSA Director’s Academy Program are invited to register. Coaches will receive information on various player development topics, futsal developmental topics as well as participate in classroom and field sessions. MSYSA is excited to announce that our guest clinicians will be John O’Sullivan, Drew Ducker and Erwin van Elst who will help provide additional education to our members.

The cost to register for this Symposium is $75.00 per candidate.

Meet John O’Sullivan

John founded the Changing the Game Project in 2012 in order to help parents, coaches and youth sports organizations create a more child-centered sports experience for our young athletes. John is a former collegiate and professional soccer player, and worked for 20 years on the youth, high school and college level as a coach and club Technical Director. He holds a USSF ‘A’ License, NSCAA Advanced National Diploma, and a US Youth Soccer National License. His blog is now one of the most popular youth sports websites in the US, and his writing has been featured in the Huffington Post, The Soccer Wire, and Soccer America. John has been a presenter at TEDx Bend Oregon, IMG Academy, and the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Convention.

Meet Drew Ducker

Drew, who still currently plays professionally for ABK in Major League Futsal and Detroit Waza in the Major Arena Soccer League, started coaching in 2000.  He currently holds US Soccer ‘A’ License, the NSCAA Premier Diploma, US Youth Futsal Level 3 Certificate and US Youth Soccer Youth National License.  He currently coaches youth players at the Canton Soccer Club, while being the Executive Director of Michigan Futsal Factory Academy and a regional team coach for US Youth Futsal.  Most recently Drew has been invited to join the US Futsal Team in Costa Rica in Nov to help in their preparation for the upcoming Futsal World Cup.

Meet Erwin van Elst

After a brief playing career in Holland for Helmond Sport in the Dutch 1st Division, coach van Elst graduated from CIOS-Arnhem (Central Institute for Athletics and Coaching) in the Netherlands where he earned his UEFA ‘B’ License.  Upon moving to the Grand Rapids (20 years ago), he has gained US Soccer’s ‘B’ License and the Meulensteen International Instructor Certificate.  Erwin presents the Meulensteen Method throughout the USA and is a regular presenter at the NSCAA conventions.  Recently he presented the 200 Meulensteen Certification course along Rene Meulensteen at the 2015 NSCAA Summer Symposium, Orlando, FL.  He is known for his proven ability to instruct the technical elements necessary for young players to improve the fundamentals of the game.  His extensive background and experience provides a wealth of knowledge he shares with his clients.  He also serves as the Director of Coaching for Soccer Club of Rockford – Meulensteen Academy (SCOR-MA).

Symposium Agenda l Wednesday, December 9, 2015

9:00 am to 10:30 am: John O’Sullivan – Beyond the X’s and O’s, reaching your players on a different level

10:45 am to 12:15 pm: Drew Ducker – Futsal, coaching to get the most out of futsal training and games

12:15 pm to 1:15 pm: Lunch (on own)

1:15 pm to 2:45 pm: John O’Sullivan – Three ways to better develop your team and / or club

3:00 pm to 4:30 pm: Erwin Van Elst – Breaking down and teaching the techniques of elite players

Participants are welcome to bring their own lunch as well as leave the facility for local area restaurants if they so choose. Additionally, each candidate is encouraged to bring writing utensils and notepads.  The Symposium is located at the High Velocity Sports Center (located at 46245 Michigan Ave., Canton, Michigan 48188).

2015/16 MSYSA Director’s Academy Information

As outlined in the 2015/16 MSYSA Director’s Academy Rules; The rostered head coach for every team participating in Director’s Academy must attend at least one (1) MSYSA approved coaching education event. A portion, to be determined by MSYSA, will be provided to clubs to help subsidize the cost of attendance.
