2008: Another Successful Year!
The US Youth Soccer Kohl’s American Cup was held June 7-8, 2008 in Muskegon for a second straight year. Just like the first year, the weekend began in typical summer fashion – hot and humid. However, unlike the previous year, Mother Nature threw a few thunderstorms our way. Luckily, the bad weather did not last long, and there was plenty time left for the fun and festivities that the tournament has become known for.
Once again, having fun - rather than winning - was the clear objective for this event, and attendees quickly jumped on board with this philosophy. Players tried unfamiliar positions and experimented with new moves, while coaches and parents simply enjoyed watching their kids play soccer. No scores or standings were kept, and every player received a participation medal, certificate, and goody bag.
Between games, tournament attendees enjoyed the debut of the MSYSA grill. Hotdogs and hamburgers were sold for $0.50 or less, and many teams took advantage of the low prices and lush grass to sit down, relax, and have a picnic. The Kohl’s American Cup festivities also included the several inflatable games, the MSYSA Skills & Drills Challenge, the infamous MSYSA Prize Wheel, and a fundraising competition to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Congratulations to the Livonia Rockets and Mitchell Hubbard for raising the most amount of money per team and per player!
Thank you to everyone who helped make this event possible. We hope to see you back next year! For information about the 2009 MYSA Kohl’s Cup, please check back periodically.
