Several of Michigan’s top ODP athletes recently represented the state through the USYS ODP, taking part in national team experiences both domestically and internationally. From competing in Florida to training and playing overseas, these players gained invaluable exposure, development, and memories that will last a lifetime. Their journeys reflect not only their talent, but also their dedication to reaching the highest levels of the game.
Each player returned with meaningful takeaways from their experience. Ellie Hickox (2010 Girls) emphasized the importance of mindset and effort, sharing, “If you set your mind to it and work hard, you can achieve it.” Vivian Christianson (2011 Girls) highlighted the value of teamwork, noting how important communication is when playing alongside athletes from different backgrounds and styles. Hairdar Alemara (2012 Boys) echoed similar advice, encouraging others to “work hard, stay consistent, and follow their dreams.” For Avery Gunn (2011 Girls), the experience reinforced the importance of appreciating every moment, saying, “Enjoy it while you are there… it doesn’t last forever, even though we want it to.” Meanwhile, Emma Kulpa (2013 Girls) reflected on the honor of representing Michigan, calling it “such a privilege to be selected and compete alongside so many talented players.“
Together, these players showcased the strength of Michigan soccer while embracing the opportunity to grow on a national stage. Their experiences serve as inspiration for the next generation of ODP athletes, proving that with hard work, passion, and a love for the game, incredible opportunities are within reach. 2009 Boys player Waleed Alhiyafi will be back from Spain at the end of the month, and we cannot wait to hear about his experience!
