Which pathway do I choose? The pathway you choose is ultimately a personal preference, which is based on your level of experience, the age groups you are currently coaching, and the age groups you plan to coach in the future. For these reasons, it is common to take courses from both pathways. However, our recommendations for coaches are as follows:
Novice Coaches with little or no experience should focus on the United Soccer Coaches 4 v 4 to 11 v 11 Modules and / or U.S. Soccer Grassroots License. These courses are designed to provide parent-coaches working at the recreational/grassroots & select/travel levels with the soccer knowledge and coaching tools necessary to successfully navigate the youth soccer experience. There is no formal assessment in these courses and a playing background is not a requirement.
Coaches with a significant playing and/or coaching experience who are looking at a more professional track should look to complete U.S. Soccer’s Grassroots Courses (4v4, 7v7, 9v9, 11v11) & D License and may also begin the United Soccer Coaches pathway with the National Diploma.
