Playa Bowls – Fuel for Healthy, Active Lifestyles

Playa Bowls is a superfruit-focused food concept that delivers vibrant, nutrient-rich bowls, smoothies, juices, and protein-packed options designed to support active, on-the-go lives – making them a natural partner for the MSYSA community of athletes, families, and sport supporters.


What are Playa Bowls?

Playa Bowls began in 2014 when founders Abby Taylor and Rob Giuliani brought their passion for fresh, wholesome food and beach lifestyle to New Jersey. What started as a small stand soon became a nationwide brand with 300+ locations across 30 states, all focused on fresh ingredients and balanced nutrition.

The menu includes fun, customizable bowls and smoothies featuring bases like:

  • Acai – a Brazilian superfruit rich in antioxidants and healthy fats
  • Pitaya (dragon fruit) – colorful and vitamin-packed
  • Coconut, Mango, Banana & Greens – offering variety for all tastes

Guests can top their bowls with fresh fruit, seeds, granola, nut butters, and more to make a meal that fits their nutritional and taste preferences.


The Health Science Behind the Ingredients

Acai berries, one of Playa Bowls’ signature ingredients, are considered a nutrient-dense superfruit with benefits that include:

  • High antioxidant content, which may help neutralize free radicals
  • Healthy fats and fiber, which support digestion and fullness
  • Potential support for heart, brain, and metabolic health when consumed as part of a balanced diet

These characteristics make acai and other superfruit bases a great foundation for wholesome meals and snacks – especially for individuals with high activity levels like youth athletes.


Introducing the Protein Wave

In 2026, Playa Bowls launched its Protein Wave menu, offering high-protein smoothies and bowls that deliver 31-42 grams of protein per item – a boost ideal for pre- or post- practice fuel and muscle recovery.

The Protein Wave lineup includes options like:

  • Protein Power Acai Bowl – with cacao protein, banana, and peanut butter
  • Tidal Wave Smoothie – with coconut base, kale, and vanilla protein
  • Rise & Shine Smoothie – with banana, blueberry, protein, and nut butter

This makes Playa Bowls a more complete meal choice for athletes and active families than traditional smoothie bowls that may lack sufficient protein on their own.


Playa Bowls & Balanced Nutrition

According to dietitians, Playa Bowls can be part of a weight-wise and health-focused diet when built mindfully:

  • Choose bases like acai, pitaya, or greens for vitamins, antioxidants, and fiber
  • Add protein (protein powder, Greek yogurt) to increase satiety and support muscle recovery
  • Limit high-sugar toppings like honey, granola, and sweet sauces if trying to manage calories
