In March 2025, the MSYSA Olympic Development Program (ODP) 2010-2011 Girls and Boys teams embarked on an unforgettable journey to Barcelona, Spain – a city known for its world-class soccer culture, stunning architecture, and rich history. Over the course of seven action-packed days, players, coaches, and families experienced elite travel training, intense competition, and immersive culture experiences that make for an unforgettable trip.
HIGH-LEVEL TRAINING & COMPETITIVE MATCHES
From the moment they arrived, players were immersed in a professional soccer environment. Training sessions were led by top Spanish academy coaches, giving athletes a chance to refine their technical skills, tactical awareness, and overall game intelligence. These sessions focused on aspects such as quick decision-making, possession-based play, and adapting to the high-tempo European style of soccer.
In addition to training, the teams competed in friendly matches against local Spanish academy teams. These matches tested their abilities against skilled opponents, pushing them to adapt and elevate their level of play. Facing international competition provided valuable lessons on teamwork, resilience, and strategic thinking, all while showcasing the talent and determination of ODP players.
A TRUE PROFESSIONAL SOCCER EXPERIENCE
A major highlight of the trip was visiting the legendary Spotify Camp Nou, the home of FC Barcelona. Players and families enjoyed an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour, walking through the stadium tunnels, sitting in the team’s dugout, and learning about the club’s rich history and global impact.
The excitement continued as the group attended a live La Liga match, experiencing the incredible atmosphere of Spanish soccer firsthand. The energy, passion, and skill on display were inspiring for the players, many of whom dream of one day playing at that level.
CULTURAL EXPLORATION & TEAM BONDING
Beyond the soccer field, players and families had the opportunity to explore the vibrant culture of Barcelona. The group visited some of the city’s most famous landmarks, including the breathtaking La Sagrada Familia, the colorful and artistic Park Güell, and the scenic coastline of Barceloneta Beach.
Between sightseeing and team meals, players formed strong bonds with their teammates, creating friendships and memories that will last a lifetime. The experience of traveling together and navigating a new culture, and sharing once-in-a-lifetime moments deepened the sense of camaraderie within the group.
FAMILY & STAFF REFLECTIONS
“What a truly incredible experience, traveling to Spain with the ODP team. My daughter was able to play soccer against some incredible Spanish teams and built lasting friendships. The parents also had a blast with each other, the coaches, and ODP staff. True connections were made with soccer families all over Michigan. These are the life experiences that truly make an impact!” – Shaelie Lambarth, mother of Claire.
“My favorite thing was meeting new amazing people while exploring parts of the world I’ve never seen!” – Alena Van Tubergen, ODP Player.
“The ODP trip to Barcelona was an amazing experience from start to finish! The players got to train with top-level coaches, play games against strong local teams, and really see what soccer looks like on a global stage. Off the field, there was plenty of time to explore the cities in the Catalonia Region – from checking out La Sagrada FamÃlia and walking the Passeig de la Muralla wall around Girona to visiting Camp Nou and soaking up the beauty of Tossa de Mar. It was an awesome mix of soccer, sightseeing, and making memories with some of the most enjoyable people I’ve ever met!” – Amanda Van Tubergen, mother of Alena.
“I was surprised by how emotional I felt when the kids first stepped onto the field for their debut game against Girona FC. I was thrilled to be in Barcelona, but I didn’t expect to be so moved seeing them in their uniforms, ready to play. It was truly one of the highlights of my trip – I felt incredibly proud and excited for them as they made their international debuts!” – Julie Pearson, ODP Program Manager.
“This trip to Barcelona was truly fantastic. The soccer games were challenging and fun. The scenery was incredible! I think my favorite part was getting a chance to know the players and families, who are often just names on the other end of an email. So many friendships were formed!” – Elizabeth Satterley, Member Services Manager.
“We had an amazing trip filled with learning, growth, and unforgettable memories. Our family got the chance to visit Barcelona, and it was an experience we’ll never forget. One of the best parts was watching Youssef play soccer in Spain, going up against teams with a totally different style. It was fun, challenging, and a big confidence boost for him. He made great friends – both teammates and opponents – and learned a lot about what he wants to work on as a player. Outside of soccer, we loved exploring the beautiful city and meeting other awesome families. Huge thanks to the ODP staff and coaches for making the trip so special – we really appreciate all their hard work!” – Sedhom Family.
