DCFC Downriver 07/08B Elite emerged victorious in one of the most dramatic matches of the 2026 MSYSA State Cup Finals, defeating Saline FC 07/08B Black in a penalty shootout after an unforgettable 5-5 draw through regulation and overtime.
The action started early in the ninth minute when Saline’s goalkeeper launched a long free kick into the attacking half. A DCFC defender attempted to head the ball away, but the touch redirected backward and into the net, giving Saline a 1-0 lead. Less than 5 minutes later, Saline struck again to double its advantage before adding a third goal in the 18th minute to take a commanding 3-0 lead.
DCFC Downriver refused to back down. In the 35th minute, DCFC capitalized on a rebound opportunity to pull a goal back and make it 3-1. The comeback continued in the 47th minute when DCFC found the net again, cutting the deficit to 3-2.
Saline responded shortly after halftime, scoring in the 55th minute to restore a two-goal cushion at 4-2. As time began to wind down, DCFC mounted another rally. A goal in the 79th minute brought the score back to 4-3 before an equalizer in the 85th minute completed the comeback and tied the match at 4-4.
The drama was far from over. Less than a minute after DCFC leveled the score, Saline answered immediately to reclaim the lead at 5-4. Moments later, DCFC once again found a response, scoring to make it 5-5 and sending the championship match into overtime.
Neither side could find a winner during the extra periods, forcing the State Cup title to be decided from the penalty spot.
DCFC gained the advantage immediately when Saline’s opening penalty attempt was saved. DCFC converted its first kick and then watched Saline miss its second attempt. After DCFC scored again to make it 2-for-2, Saline converted its third penalty, but DCFC answered with another successful effort. Saline’s fourth attempt was then stopped, and DCFC buried its fourth penalty to seal the championship victory.
The thrilling penalty shootout win crowned DCFC Downriver 07/08B Elite as the 2026 MSYSA State Cup U18/19 Boys Premier Champion. With the title, DCFC Downriver earned the opportunity to represent Michigan at the Great Lakes Presidents Cup in Indiana, where they will compete against top teams from across the region.
