Orlando, Florida July 22-27, 2025

This summer, a group of dedicated referees proudly represented Michigan at the 2025 US Youth Soccer (USYS) National Championships in Orlando, Florida. Their presence on the national stage was not only a testament to their technical officiating skills but also a reflection of their passion, perseverance, and deep commitment to the game.

For many, officiating at Nationals is the culmination of years of training, learning, and personal growth. Referee Kaitlin Girbach, in her second appearance at the event, described the opportunity as “an incredible honor,” while Jared Wensley called it “a surreal feeling” to wear the Michigan badge and carry on the legacy of those who came before. Colton Odem and Ashley Vredenburg credited the support of mentors, assessors, and peers in helping them reach this level. Evan Barnett echoed that sentiment while reflecting on the pride he felt officiating the U16 Boys final – one of the tournament’s premier matchups.

While the competition was intense, it was the sense of community that left the greatest impression on these officials. Jared spoke of being encouraged by complete strangers when the Florida heat took its toll on day one, describing it as a moment that captured the spirit of the referee family. Kaitlin shared how special it was to bond with other female referees in the locker room, while Ashley recalled the joy and emotion she felt when her name was announced for the U16 Girls final – an unforgettable moment of validation and celebration. Colton and Evan also emphasized the friendships formed throughout the week and the shared pride in each other’s accomplishments.

Looking ahead, these referees offered valuable advice to younger officials aspiring to reach similar heights. “Stay coachable, be resilient, and always ask questions,” Ashley advised. “Don’t give up – one bad game doesn’t define your career.” Jared added, “Be the referee that everyone is happy to see assigned to their match, and the rest will follow.”

Their stories serve as a powerful reminder that referees are more than just enforcers of the rules. They are mentors, role models, and integral members of the soccer community. Congratulations to all our Michigan referees on their outstanding representation at Nationals – you continue to make our state proud both on and off the field!
